A Golfer’s Welcome to Cumberland County, Tennessee

There’s a reason Cumberland County is known as the Golf Capital of Tennessee. Set high on the Cumberland Plateau, this area of Tennessee offers something rare: a collection of golf courses that feel distinct from one another, yet all share the same sense of space, scenery, and unhurried charm.

For visiting golfers, it’s the kind of place where mornings start with cool mountain air, rounds are played at a comfortable pace, and evenings are spent over good food and easy conversation.

Whether you’re planning a dedicated golf getaway or weaving a few rounds into a longer visit, Cumberland County, Tennessee provides many choices and welcomes you!

Lake Tansi Golf Course – Relaxed, Scenic, and Approachable

Designed by Robert Renaud, the Lake Tansi Golf Course offers a year-round, 18-hole championship golf course, rated among the Top 10 Golf Courses in Tennessee by Golf Advisor and is host to the TN Section PGA Team Championship.

This meticulously maintained course provides golfers with a comfortable balance of challenge and playability, with gentle elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and greens that reward smart shot selection without overwhelming newer players. With a driving range, putting green, and six tee options stretching from 4,242 to 6,701 yards, Lake Tansi Golf Course allows golfers of every skill level to enjoy a round that feels comfortable, engaging, and rewarding.

Scenic appeal here comes from the surrounding plateau landscape and quiet residential setting. It feels peaceful — a place where you can focus on the game and enjoy being outdoors.

The pro shop is welcoming and well stocked with essentials, apparel, and local advice. After your round, many golfers linger for a casual meal and a drink at the 19th Hole restaurant next to the pro shop, easing into the remaining day instead of rushing off.

For overnight stays, Lake Tansi Village offers 18 lakeside cabins and rental cottages, making it easy to pair morning golf with evenings by the water. They comfortably accommodate four adults, featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living room, and a private deck to relax and enjoy the views. Just a short walk — less than half a mile — brings you to the golf shop, recreation center, beach, marina, and  restaurants, giving you everything you need for a memorable golf getaway or a family vacation.

Crossville’s lodging accommodations are also just minutes away, offering flexibility for visitors playing multiple courses.

Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park – A Signature Experience

For golfers looking for something memorable, Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park delivers from the very first tee. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this course embraces the natural terrain, with elevation changes, forested corridors, and flowing streams shaping every hole.

Bear Trace plays as one of the county’s more demanding courses, but it never feels punishing. Instead, it rewards thoughtful strategy and confident shot-making, especially from the back tees.

What truly sets Bear Trace apart is the setting. Located inside a state park, the scenery is immersive — tall trees, rolling hills, and long, quiet stretches where it feels like the course belongs entirely to you.

The pro shop and practice facilities are well maintained, and while the course itself keeps the focus on golf, nearby Crossville offers plenty of dining options once the round is done.

Visitors often choose to stay right in the park, where cabins and the historic Byrd Lake Lodge create a peaceful base for a golf-centered escape.

Stonehenge Golf Club – Dramatic and Refined

Stonehenge is frequently described as one of Tennessee’s most beautiful courses, and it earns that reputation honestly. Architect, Joe Lee, laid out the course with natural rock formations, rolling terrain, and carefully placed bunkers to give the course a distinctive personality that stays with you long after the round ends.

This is a course that challenges experienced golfers while remaining fair and enjoyable for others. Strategy matters here — positioning off the tee, thoughtful approaches, and confidence on the greens.

The clubhouse adds to the experience rather than distracting from it. The on-site restaurant overlooking the course, Stonehenge Grille, offers a relaxed place to unwind with lunch or dinner, making it easy to turn a round into a full afternoon outing.

Dorchester Golf Club – Quiet, Thoughtful Golf

Designed by Bobby Greenwood, Dorchester feels a little different — in the best way. Tree-lined fairways, subtle water features, and a quieter atmosphere make this course ideal for golfers who enjoy precision and pacing over length and spectacle.

Open to members, Fairfield Glade guests, and the general public with some restrictions, each hole on the course feels carefully placed within the landscape, and the course rewards players who enjoy shaping shots and staying patient.

The Snack Bar is a friendly stop at the Dorchester and offers a modest, but delightful menu for players.

There are also many alternative dining options local to Fairfield Glade or Crossville, sure to keep the day relaxed and unhurried.

Heatherhurst Golf Club – Two Courses, Two Experiences

Course designed by Gary Roger Baird, Heatherhurst offers visitors flexibility with two distinct 18-hole courses. Many golf enthusiasts enjoy the challenge of playing  all 36 holes in one day!

Heatherhurst Brae provides more elevation change and strategic variety, appealing to golfers who enjoy thinking their way through a round.

Heatherhurst Crag is more forgiving, with wider fairways and a comfortable rhythm that suits casual play and vacation golf.

Both courses share the same scenic character — rolling hills, wooded edges, and frequent wildlife sightings — and both fit naturally into a multi-day stay in Fairfield Glade.

Similar to Dorchester, Heatherhurst offers The Snack Bar to calm a hungry stomach!

There are plenty of other nearby dining options throughout the community, including the beautiful Stonehenge, which makes it easy to plan post-round meals without leaving the area.

Cumberland Cove – Traditional and Welcoming

Though not in Cumberland County, Cumberland Cove Golf Course is just down the road from Crossville, off Hwy. 70 N. in Monterey.

The course offers a classic golf experience that feels familiar and comforting. The layout is fair and enjoyable, with enough water and bunker placement to keep players engaged without slowing the pace of play.

The scenery here is open and peaceful, with long views and a sense of space that makes the round feel unrushed.
